The basics

Frequently Asked Questions

Booking, pricing, and what to expect at Petal & Pigment Tattoos in Cranford, NJ.

How do I book a tattoo with Paula?

The easiest way is through Venue — that's my booking platform — or Instagram DMs. You'll fill out a quick form telling me what you want, where on your body, ballpark size, and any reference pics. If we're a fit, we'll nail down the design and the date. If we're not a fit — say it's not a style I do — I'll let you know that too. You can also send me an email with the subject line "Carrier Pigeon".

What styles does Paula tattoo?

High color, color realism, anime and pop culture, florals, and illustrative tattoos. Paula is a color specialist.

How does pricing work?

There's a pricing chart on the site (and in my IG highlights). These aren't set in stone, though! What moves the number: where on your body, the style (illustrative realism takes longer than watercolor), the exact size, and the level of detail and color. Compact pieces (2–3") are around $200–300. Larger custom work goes up from $900. For longer sessions, I have a day rate — just ask.

Do you take walk-ins?

No, sorry — I'm by appointment only. I'm too autistic for walk-ins. Best bet is to book me ahead of time (see question 1).

Where is the studio located?

500 Centennial Ave, Cranford, NJ 07016. Parking is easy. (551) 837-9399 if you need to reach the shop.

Is the studio body-positive / size inclusive?

Yes. All bodies are good bodies!

Does Paula do cover-ups?

Yes — sometimes cover-ups are part of what I do. Send a clear photo of the existing piece in your booking inquiry and I'll let you know if it's something we can do. Some old tattoos cover beautifully; some need a laser removal first. I'll be honest about what's realistic.

Does Paula travel for conventions?

Yep! I do a few each year. Currently on the books: Anime Ink. Convention bookings usually fill up early, so ask early.

Can I get a tattoo of an AI-generated image?

No. AI image generators are trained on artists' work — including illustrators and tattooers — without consent or payment. Also the image is often not tattooable.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes. A deposit holds your spot, and the amount depends on the total cost of the tattoo.

What's your cancellation / reschedule policy?

The deposit is non-refundable. If something comes up you can reschedule up to 5 days before the appointment, or cancel and float the deposit for another appointment for up to a year. If you cancel or reschedule after that, you will lose your deposit.

Do you tattoo minors?

No — I don't tattoo anyone under 18, even with parent's consent.

How should I prep for my appointment?

A few things help the day go smoothly: Don't drink or smoke marijuana the day before or the day of the appointment. At least 2 hours before the appointment, make sure you ate a solid meal with complex carbohydrates to maintain blood sugar throughout your appointment. No alcohol 72 hours before the appointment. Paula is extremely allergic to marijuana — please don't smoke/use it before coming. The space is limited but private; you can bring a single guest.

What about aftercare?

I provide aftercare kits to all clients free of charge.
